ABOUT
John Conroy is a BAFTA-nominated, award-winning Director/Producer making films about people at the centre of the forces shaping our world. He seeks out difficult-to-reach stories, complex realities and questions that resist easy answers.
His work often anticipates issues before they enter the wider public debate. Transgender Kids: Who Knows Best? challenged prevailing orthodoxies around transgender children; more recently, Hungarians examined increasingly urgent questions about nationhood and borders, asking what they mean for democracy, identity and belonging through the lives of ordinary citizens.
Getting close to people lies at the heart of his work. He builds the trust that brings intimacy and emotional depth to even the toughest environments — from families confronting deeply personal decisions to gang members in Colombia, Indigenous communities in the Amazon and soldiers under fire in Afghanistan. In 2010, he was shot and wounded while filming a battle with the Taliban, deepening his first-hand understanding of conflict and its human cost.
John works internationally across Britain and Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas. Years of filmmaking in Brazil have given him an intimate knowledge of the country, its people, politics and language. His work spans broadcasters, streaming platforms and independent clients, with films for the BBC, Outpost Studios, Channel 4, Sky and Netflix.
