Film Clip: Dispatches: South Africa’s Dirty Cops
This film investigates cases of torture, abuse and the infamous massacre of mineworkers in 2012 committed by the South African police force. Karabo, a fourteen year old boy, was stripped, hooded and beaten; Richard, an innocent security guard, was imprisoned without charge and tortured with electric shocks; Andries Tatane, a teacher and protestor, was murdered by police on a demonstration, and thirty four striking miners were shot dead at Marikana. The film reveals the popular disbelief and anger at how a force, once heralded as the defenders of the Rainbow nation, has adopted the same brutal tactics to put down protest and intimidate communities as its apartheid predecessor.
